Pair of Two Large 1940s Tlaquepaque Hand Painted Mexican Pottery Bowls
These two bowls were discovered together and will be sold as a pair.
Larger bowl measures 10-1/4 inches in diameter and is 5 inches tall. Smaller bowl measures 8-3/4 inches in diameter and is 4-1/4 inches tall.
Both bowls feature delightful Art-Deco influenced designs handpainted on a chartreuse green field, clearly by the same hand. Both are marked TLAQUEPAQUE MEXICO.
The larger bowl has a village scene painted on one side, with 2 houses nestled beneath a palm tree and towering cacti. On the other side, it shows a blue deer lying in a field of cactus.
On one side, the smaller bowl shows a seated woman’s back, framed by cacti, and on the other side a blue deer lying in a similar field of cactus, shaded by an umbrella-shaped tree.
No chips or cracks on either bowl. There is some glaze wear to both, consistent with having been nested for more than 70 years. This wear is more obvious on the interior of the large bowl and the exterior of the small bowl. Both present beautifully and are in very good vintage condition.
