1950s Navajo Yei Bei Chi Cross Stitch Placemats, Napkins, Runner Set
This set includes 4 placemats, 4 napkins, and a runner for the center of the table. It was acquired in the mid 1950s in Arizona by a nurse who was working there on the reservation. Worked in colorful wool counted cross stitch on beige woven linen.
The four placemats feature the Corn Maiden. She is wearing a yellow dress with black and white patterns on the skirt, red boots, and has red and green tassels falling from her arms. Her face is blue and she has black and white feathers in her hair. She is holding a rattle and a green corn plant. Each placemat measures 11-3/4 by 17 inches.
The four napkins measure 11-1/2 inches square. Each has a corn symbol in one corner. Two are edged with red blanket stitch and two have blue blanket stitching.
This set is in excellent vintage condition, as it has been stored in an open plastic bag for approximately 65 years and was never used. It is being sold as found, without laundering or pressing. No damage to wool stitching or linen backing material. No stains, holes, or odor.
